Our Vision

For more than 20 years, CARE USA and Emory University – principally within the Rollins School of Public Health – have collaborated across global health and development sectors. The vision of the CARE-Emory Collaboration is to jointly produce high-impact, policy-and programmatically-relevant applied research and learning to address global challenges to human development for transformative impact at scale.

Our Renewed Collaboration

The foundation of our renewed collaboration is a framework structured around six functional domains and reflective of CARE’s key program areas and Emory’s world-class methodological and technical research expertise. Our aim is that this framework will increase the breadth and depth of collaboration between Emory researchers and CARE programs beyond existing relationships and generate grant funding, produce impactful research and learning, and inform global policymakers.

Capacity Strengthening

CARE staff have invaluable field experience, giving them an in-depth knowledge of the challenges of program implementation. Emory researchers provide rigorous research methodologies that help CARE create high-impact evidence needed to make important policy recommendations. By working together, we are able to pull from their complementary strengths to create more impactful policies and programs.

CARE | Emory Speaker Series

As part of our strengthened collaboration, CARE and Emory established a speaker series for routine capacity strengthening. These sessions are facilitated by content experts from each institution and are broadly available to staff across CARE and faculty and staff at Emory. These sessions bring together staff from both organizations and can spark conversations that lead to additional collaborations.

Student Engagement and Learning Opportunities

Every year, colleagues at CARE and Emory coordinate to establish opportunities for graduate students from the Rollins School of Public Health and those in the Masters in Development Practices program. These student engagement and learning opportunities help support research and program implementation, enhanced CARE’s workforce, provide Emory students with meaningful experiences, and make peer-reviewed contributions to science.

Rollins Earn and Learn (“REAL” Program)

CARE has employed over 100 graduate students through the Rollins Earn and Learn program. This program offers students valuable opportunities to earn while they learn through applied public health experiences in real-world settings. Beyond the direct work experience, it is an opportunity for students to be mentored by public health professionals.

Global Field Experience and practicums

CARE is a key partner for practicum opportunities for Emory students. The Global Field Experience Financial Award is a unique scholarship offered by the Rollins School of Public Health. The scholarship was started to encourage students interested in global health to participate in supervised field training which will facilitate the transfer of classroom knowledge into practical experiences.

Professional Development

The Hubert Department of Global Health provides opportunities for mid-career public health professionals from developing nations to pursue a degree at the Rollins School of Public Health. CARE is able to further the education of their staff by nominating those who meet the eligibility requirements. In addition, the Rollins School of Public Health also offers continuing education training and certificates as professional development opportunities for non-degree seeking students.

Foege Fellowship

The William H. Foege Global Health Fellowship at Emory is a program in which mid-career public health professionals from developing nations can pursue a degree at the Rollins School of Public Health and receive full tuition and fees for the duration of their enrollment. CARE is one of five Atlanta-based public health organizations the Foege Fellowship partners with. Nominations can only be made by these five participating organizations.

Applied Research

CARE and Emory have collaborated on several high-profile applied research projects. Through these collaborative projects, we have developed key policy recommendations for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in schools, and provided high-impact evidence for program implementation.

Tipping Point Project (Nepal/Bangladesh: 2019-present)

Researchers at the Rollins School of Public Health have a four-year partnership with CARE’s Tipping Point Project, aimed at improving the lives of adolescent girls. Researchers are evaluating the CARE Tipping Point Project, which uses a social norms approach in Nepal and Bangladesh to empower adolescent girls and their communities to delay marriage and to promote girls’ rights.

SWASH+ (Kenya: 2006-2019)

School Water, Sanitation and Hygiene plus Community Impact (SWASH+) was a 13-year project that is an exemplar of the impact of CARE and Emory collaborations. It has resulted in over 20 publications from both institutions, including policy papers that have contributed significantly to increasing the scale, impact, and sustainability of school WASH interventions in Kenya.
